The Baptism: A Voice from Heaven
The baptism of Jesus at the River Jordan was a pivotal public moment. It wasn't just about the act of baptism; it was the first public confirmation by God the Father, where the Spirit descended and The Father's voice was heard by those present.
Matthew 3: 13-17 (New King James Version)
"Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent him... But Jesus answered... 'Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.' Then he allowed him.
When he had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and resting upon him.
And suddenly, a voice came from heaven, saying, 'This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'"
The Significance
This event is a clear and direct confirmation from God himself. The voice from heaven leaves no room for doubt, explicitly identifying Jesus as His Son and expressing His divine pleasure. This profound statement confirms Jesus's divine nature.
The Transfiguration: A Second Confirmation
This was not the only time God's voice was heard. Later, Jesus went up on a mountain with three of his closest disciples and was "transfigured" before them. This event provided a second, powerful confirmation of His identity.
What Happened
- Jesus's appearance changed, his face shining like the sun.
- The great prophets **Moses and Elijah** appeared and talked with him.
- A bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice spoke.
The Voice
From the cloud, Peter, James, and John heard the voice of God say:
"This is my beloved Son... Hear him. I'm pleased with him."
This moment reinforced the message from the baptism, this time instructing the disciples to listen to Jesus, placing His authority above even that of Moses (representing the Law) and Elijah (representing the Prophets).
The Witnesses: Who Heard the Voice?
These divine confirmations were not private events. God ensured there were witnesses to carry the message to the world. Having multiple witnesses was a crucial part of validating a claim.
John the Baptist
At the baptism, John was the primary witness. He not only baptized Jesus, but he **saw the Spirit descend like a dove** and **likely heard the voice of God**. This event confirmed for John that Jesus was the one he had been preparing the way for, the Son of God.
Peter, James, and John
At the Transfiguration, this "inner circle" of disciples were the chosen witnesses. They **saw Jesus speaking with Moses and Elijah** and **all heard the voice from the cloud**. This event solidified their faith and became a core part of their testimony after Jesus's resurrection.
Why Witnesses Matter
Jesus had multiple witnesses to tell everyone else that He is the Son of God. This fulfilled the principle of testimony being established by "two or three witnesses," adding incredible weight and credibility to the claim.
