Here is a very interesting secret about the land of Canaan:

According to some very old Israelite books (like the Book of Jasher and Jubilees), the land where Canaan lived actually belonged to his uncle, Shem. Shem was the grandfather of the Israelites!

Canaan’s family lived there for a long time, so people called it "The Land of Canaan." But later on, the Israelites (Shem's descendants) came back to live there. When they moved back in, the name changed to the Land of Israel. It’s like a family returning to their original home!

1. The Family Map

But then, Ham’s son Canaan saw Shem’s land. He saw the beautiful trees and the sparkling Jordan River and thought, "I want to live here instead!" Even though it wasn't his, he moved in anyway. Because he stayed there so long, people started calling it the "Land of Canaan," but he was really like a guest who wouldn't leave.

3. Moving Back In

Many, many years later, Shem’s great-great-great-grandchildren (the Israelites) came back to the land. When they arrived with Joshua, they weren't taking someone else's home—they were finally coming back to the home Daddy Noah had given their family at the very beginning!

As soon as they moved back in, the Israelites changed the name. It wasn't the Land of Canaan anymore; it became the Land of Israel, the home where they were always meant to be.

Let's Review the Great Flood and a New Beginning

Do you remember the previous stories in which I told you how, a long, long time ago, the world had became a very sad place? People were not being kind to each other, and their hearts were filled with naughtiness. God was very, very sad to see all of this. He decided that He needed to wash away all the bad things and start fresh.

So, God told me, Noah, to build a very big boat, an ark!

I worked so hard, and you know what? God also told me to bring two of every kind of animal onto the ark, a boy and a girl! Can you imagine all the sounds we heard inside? Roars, squeaks, chirps, and meows!

Then, the rain came! It rained and rained for forty days and forty nights! The waters covered everything, but inside the ark, we were safe. God protected us and all the animals.

After many, many days, the rain stopped, and the waters slowly went down. Finally, our ark rested on a mountain, and we could see dry land again! Oh, how thankful we were to God! When we came out of the ark, I built an altar and offered a sacrifice to God, thanking Him for saving us. God was very pleased with our thankfulness.

God's Everlasting Promise

Then, something truly amazing happened! God spoke to me and to my sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. He also spoke to all the animals that were with us. God said, "Look! I am making a promise to you and to all your children, and to all the animals that are with you – to every living creature on the earth."

What was this wonderful promise? God said, "I promise that never again will a flood destroy all living things. Never again will there be a flood to wipe out the earth." Isn't that incredible? God made this promise for all time!

8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying: 

9 “And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you and with your  descendants after you,

16 The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 

17 And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

And how would we remember this amazing promise? God said, "I will put my bow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth."

Can you guess what that bow is? Yes, it's the beautiful rainbow!

God continued, "Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life."

So, every time we see a rainbow, it's like God is reminding Himself, and reminding us, of His special promise! He even repeated it, saying, "Whenever the bow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."

Have you ever wondered how those beautiful colors get into the sky?It's a little bit of  beauty from God's amazing creation! You see, the sunlight, which looks white to us, is actually made up of many different colors, like red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

When sunlight shines through tiny raindrops in the air, the raindrops act like tiny little prisms. They bend the light and split it into all these beautiful colors, making a big, colorful arc in the sky! Isn't that clever? God used something so simple and natural to make such a magnificent sign of His promise.

God is Always Faithful

This story teaches us something very important about God: He is always faithful! When God makes a promise, He keeps it, forever and ever. Every time we see a rainbow, we are reminded of God's unchanging love and His promise never to destroy the earth with a flood. It's like a big, colorful hug from God in the sky!

A Journey Remembered: The Waters Recede

My dear children, gather 'round! Do you remember our grand adventure? Do you recall the mighty ark, floating on the vast, wide waters? The world was covered, wasn't it? But God, in His great love, kept us safe inside that strong boat – my family, and all the animals too!

It was a long time, but God always remembered us. He sent a wind to blow over the earth, and slowly, slowly, the waters began to go down. First, we saw the tops of the mountains, then more and more dry land! Oh, what a sight that was!

Stepping Onto New Earth

We sent out a raven, do you remember? And then a dove. The first dove came back, but the second one brought a fresh olive leaf! What did that mean, my little ones? It meant new life! It meant the earth was ready for us again! And finally, God spoke to me, saying, "Go out from the ark, you and your wife, and your sons and your sons' wives with you. Bring out with you every living thing that is with you of all flesh..." (Genesis 8:16-17, ESV).

And so we did! We all stepped out onto the fresh, clean earth. The birds flew, the animals scampered, and my family and I breathed in the sweet, fresh air. It was a brand new beginning! Can you imagine how happy we were? Can you feel the joy in our hearts?

Then Noah built an altar to the LORD and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

My Heart Was Full of Thanks to God

Now, when we stepped out, my heart was overflowing with gratitude. I thought, "How can I thank God enough for saving us and keeping us safe through such a mighty storm?" I built an altar and gave an offering to God:

"Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar." (Genesis 8:20, ESV).

Do you know what an altar is? It's a special place we built in those days to show God our worship and our love. We built it with stones, carefully piled high. And then, we gave an offering of some of the animals and birds to God. 

This was our way ancient people gave offerings to God. This is how we told God a big, "Thank You, God!" It was a sacrifice of thanksgiving, showing Him that we recognized His great power and His amazing kindness.

God's Promise and Delight With Our Offerings

And what did God do, children? He became pleased when He smelled the odor of my offering:

"And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, 'I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done.

 

While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.'" (Genesis 8:21-22, ESV).

God smelled our offering, and it was a "pleasing aroma" to Him. This means God was pleased with our thankfulness! He was happy that we remembered His goodness and showed Him our love. And in His heart, He made a wonderful promise. God promised that He would never again destroy all living things with a flood. He promised that the seasons would always come and go – planting time and harvest time, cold and warm, summer and winter, day and night – always, as long as the earth lasts! Isn't that an incredible promise?
