🌅 Life in Jerusalem At That Time

Long ago, in the city of Jerusalem, people lived in stone houses with flat roofs. The streets were narrow, and the air smelled of bread baking and olive oil. It was the Feast of Pentecost, a joyful time when families brought baskets of grain to the Temple to thank God for the harvest.

Men wore long robes, breeches and sandals, women carried water jars, and children played near the wells. Everyone was busy preparing food and singing songs of praise.

But in one quiet house, a group of Jesus’ friends — about 120 believers — were waiting an upstairs room. They remembered His promise: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.”

They were waiting for the Promise that Jesus had promised to give to His disciples. The Promise was the Holy Spirit who would give believers in Jesus new power to become like Jesus and to tell others about Him.

🌬️ The Sound from Heaven

The disciples were praying when suddenly...

, the air began to move. 🌪️

A mighty rushing wind filled the house! Curtains fluttered, clay lamps flickered, and everyone looked around in wonder.

Then something even more amazing happened — flames of fire appeared above each person’s head! 🔥

But these flames didn’t burn; they glowed like golden light.

Jesus' disciples - all 120 of them -  warmth and joy deep inside. Their hearts were full of peace. They began to speak in different languages — words they had never learned!

🌍 The Crowd Gathers

Outside, the streets of Jerusalem were crowded with visitors from many lands — Parthians, Medes, Egyptians, Romans, Arabs, and more.

They heard the strange sound and ran toward the house.

“What is happening?” one man asked.

“Listen! They’re speaking our languages!” said another.

Everyone was amazed. Some laughed and said, “They must be drunk!” 🍷

But Peter stood up and raised his voice:

“No, my friends! It’s only morning. This is what the prophet Joel spoke — God has poured out His Spirit on all people!”

🔥 Peter's Message about the Outpouring of the Holy Spirit

Peter told them about Jesus — how He died, rose again, and promised the Holy Spirit.

He said, “Turn back to God and be baptized, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

That day, about 3,000 people believed and joined Jesus' family of faith. 💧

🕊️ Why God Poured Out The Holy Spirit

The wind meant God's Holy Spirit was present, just like when He moved over the earth at the creation of the earth.

The fire showed meant that God was like fire in the lives of the believers to purify them from sins.

The languages showed that God is powerful and able to speak His Words to every nation.

On the Day of Pentecost, God added 3000 people who  were saved to the Church — a family that would spread God’s message across the world.

🏜️ Customs and Geography Notes

  • Pentecost (Hebrew Shavuot) was celebrated 50 days after Passover — a harvest festival.
  • Jerusalem sits on hills surrounded by valleys; wind often rushes through its narrow streets.
  • People gathered in upper rooms for prayer — quiet spaces above their homes.
  • Speaking in many languages showed that God’s message was for all nations, not just Israel.

💡 Lesson for Children

When we pray together and love one another, God’s Spirit can fill our hearts too.
The Holy Spirit helps us be brave, kind, and wise — just like the disciples.
