Jesus Escaped Into Egypt
Jesus Escaped Into Egypt Introduction
Recently we told the story of the amazing prophecy given by Micah that there would be a king coming out of Bethlehem Ephratah to rule His God's people Israel. The prophet foretold that the King is God. We know that from the words, "His goings forth are from old, from everlasting. "
When the wise men went to King Herod to ask about the King of the Jews, he called the chief priests and wise men and they quoted Micah's prophecy. So every Israelite, every Jew knew that the King of the Jews would have been born in Bethlehem Ephratah.
Now there were two Bethlehems in Israel. One of them was in Zebulun, but Bethlehem Ephratah was first mentioned in the Bible in Genesis when Jacob buried his wife Rachel along the road to Bethlehem Ephratah. So you see, that's the first mention of Bethlehem Ephratah; it's south of Jerusalem. Today Arabs occupy Bethlehem Ephratah—they claim it as their own—but this is part of the land, all of Israel, right, belongs to Israelites.
But anyway, we're not talking about that today, but it's so specific. He didn't say Bethlehem full stop, he said Bethlehem Ephratah and the Jews knew that. That's what they said to King Herod. So the wise men left the King, after having heard having heard him say 'Come back to me, man, I want to worship him too, hee-hee-hee,'
However, in his heart King Herod was planning to kill the newborn King of the Jews. He didn't want another king to depose his throne. When the wise men left King Herod, they saw the star again, and followed it until it stood right over where the young child lay. They went into the house, found him with his mother, and they worshipped him and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Jesus Escaped into Egypt scriptures - Matthew 2:13 to 15:
'When they, (the wise men), were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
and was there until the death of H
Jesus escaped into Egypt and became a refugee
Okay, so this is the latest part, the latest scenario in the story of the birth of Jesus. God told Joseph, his surrogate step-father, his earthly father, in a dream to flee into Egypt for safety. So folks, Jesus was a refugee. A refugee is somebody who has to flee from his country for safety.
The escape was so secretive that Joseph had to flee in the night because he did not want anybody to see them leaving. He knew that Herod would seek to kill the child and that anyone who saw them leave could snitch on them later. Their escape was like a secret mission.
Could you imagine how Mary and Joseph's hearts must have pounded as they sneaked away? Maybe they looked around to see if anybody saw them leaving, but thankfully nobody saw them go. You see how important it is to pray and seek God's face? Because when you keep close to God, God will reveal things to you.
God had a habit of speaking to Joseph in dreams. Joseph heard from God in dreams. He was a righteous man—the Bible calls him a just man—so he followed the instructions. It's important to obey the instructions of God. God told him 'Flee into Egypt, stay there until I talk to you again.'
Okay, so how amazing it is to have God talk to you. I pray that God would reveal himself to every child, whether you're an adult of God who is a child of God, or a little child. Pay attention to the things God says to you in dreams. God never would tell you to do anything contrary to the word of God—that's not from God. Anything contrary to God's word is not from God. But if God gives you something in a dream and you're not sure what it is, tell somebody in the faith, somebody who would be able to pray and help you to understand the dream.
So here what we're going to do: we're going to stop here. Next time and tomorrow we're going to find out which prophet told Israel 'Out of Egypt I have called my son,' right? This Jesus' flight into Egypt was the fulfillment of another prophecy. The Lord bless you, the Lord keep you, lift up the light of his countenance on you, be gracious to you, give you his peace. Have a blessed day children."
