24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 

25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 

26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 

27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

 Parable Of The Two Houses Introduction

Greetings, little lambs. Gather ‘round, let Jesus tell you a story  about two builders, busy as bees in the warm sunshine. Now, Jesus said that there were two men who wanted to build homes for their families. The first builder was a wise fellow. He knew that the ground could sometimes be difficult. When the rains came, oh my! The little streams would turn into rushing rivers, and the sandy places would wash away. 

So, this wise builder looked around and found a big, strong rock, a petra, solid and unmoving. He worked very hard, digging and digging until he reached that strong rock. Then, he laid the stones of his house right upon it. He built with care, knowing his house would be safe.

The man who built his house on the sand

The second builder was in a hurry. He saw a nice, flat spot nearby and thought, “This looks easy!” It was soft and sandy. So, he started building his house right there, on the sand. He didn’t dig deep for a strong base. His house went up quickly, and it looked pretty in the sunshine.

The days went by, sunny and bright. The children played in the yards of both houses. The smell of baking bread wafted through the air. Everyone was happy.

The rain began to fall heavily

But then, the weather changed. The dark clouds gathered, and the wind began to blow. The rain came down in big, heavy drops, like someone was pouring buckets from the sky! The little streams became angry rivers, rushing and roaring.

The house on the sand fell with a great crash

The rain beat against the house built on the sand. The wind howled and pushed. And what do you think happened? The sand wasn’t strong enough! The house wiggled and wobbled, and then…WHOOSH! It fell down with a great crash. All the walls tumbled, and the roof collapsed. Oh dear!

The house on the rock stood firm in the rain

But what about the other house? The rain beat against it, and the wind howled, but it stood firm. It didn't move at all! Why? Because it was built on the strong rock. The rock held it steady, safe and sound.

The meaning of the Parable of the Two Houses

Jesus continued His story or parable. My dear children, this story tells us something very important. The strong rock is the Word of God, the things I teach you. If you listen to them and  do what is right, your life will be like that house on the rock. When hard times come, and they will, you will be strong and safe because your heart is built on truth:

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 

25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 

On the other hand, if you follow things that are not in keeping with the Word of God, you are building your life on sand.  When troubles come, your heart won’t have a strong base in the Word of God, and you can fall away from what is good, right and true in His eyes:

26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 

27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

So, be wise builders. Listen to God’s words, learn them, and let them be the strong rock of your life. Then, no matter what happens, you will stand firm and know true peace. Amen.
