The Farmer and His Field
Once there was a man who worked very hard. He was a farmer, just like some of your daddies or grandpas who work in the fields. He lived in a simple house made of stone, and every sunny morning, he would wake up early. He'd have a bite of warm bread, maybe with some yummy olives, and then he'd go out to his field [Living Words, n.d.].
His field was big and dusty under the warm sun, just like some of the dry hills you see around us. He had a strong ox, a big animal that helped him. The ox would pull a special wooden tool called a plow. The plow helped dig up the dirt, making it soft and ready for planting tiny seeds of wheat or barley. Swish, swish went the plow, turning over the brown earth. It was hard work, but it helped his family have food to eat.
The Man Got A Big Surprise!
One sunny day, as the farmer was working in a part of a field, he heard a sound like clink! His plow hit something hard! He stopped his big ox. "What could that be?" he wondered. He thought it was just a big rock hiding in the dirt.
So, he got his little digging tool and started to dig around the clink sound. Dig, dig, dig! And guess what he found? Not a rock! He found an old, old pot tucked deep down in the ground!
Now, long, long ago, my little ones, people didn't have banks like we do today to keep their money safe. Sometimes, when they had to leave their homes quickly because of big storms or because bad people were coming, they would hide their valuable and precious possessions in the ground. They would put them in places they hoped to remember [Parklinscomb, 2023; Copper Scroll, n.d.]. But sometimes, they couldn't come back, and the precious things would stay hidden, sleeping in the earth for a very, very long time.
This farmer carefully opened the old pot. And oh my, what he saw made his eyes grow big and his heart sing with joy! It was full of shiny, golden coins and sparkling, colorful jewels! This was real treasure, more treasure than he had ever seen in his whole life! Can you imagine finding something so valuable and wonderful?
To understand the treasure, do you remember the treasures that the wise men brought to Jesus? Well this is the same word used in Matthew 13: 44. The wise men brought very expensive treasures of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus!
A Joyful Choice
Did he shout? Did he tell everyone right away? No! He was so, so happy, but he was also very smart. He quickly closed the pot and carefully covered it back up with dirt. Shhh! It was his secret! For now.
He knew something important. The field didn't belong to him, so he couldn't take the treasure. That would be stealing and he didn't want to make God angry. So, he thought and thought about how he could claim the treasure without doing a wrong!
Then, with a huge smile that reached his ears, he made a very important decision. He went and sold everything he had! Think of it, children: he sold his big, strong ox that helped him plow. He sold his simple house, his warm blankets, even his old shoes! He sold everything that was special to him. Why do you think he did that?
He did it because the treasure he found was even more special than his earthly possessions! It was worth more than his house, more than his ox, more than everything he owned!
So, with all the money he got from selling everything, he bought the whole field where the treasure was hidden. Now, the field was his, and so the treasure was truly his too! He was now very happy!
