The Secret Treasure Hidden in a Field!

Meta Description: Join Jesus as He tells the heartwarming story of a hidden treasure in a field, teaching children ages 3 and up about the amazing secrets and value of the Kingdom of Heaven.

One day, Jesus told a parable about the treasure hidden in a field. Hello, my dear children! Do you love stories? I do too! And today, I want to tell you a st about a man, a field, and a very special secret.

The Secret Treasure Hidden In A Field Scripture - Matthew 13: 44

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

The Farmer and His Field

Once there was a  man who worked very hard. He was a farmer, just like some of your daddies or grandpas who work in the fields. He lived in a simple house made of stone, and every sunny morning, he would wake up early. He'd have a bite of warm bread, maybe with some yummy olives, and then he'd go out to his field [Living Words, n.d.].

His field was big and dusty under the warm sun, just like some of the dry hills you see around us. He had a strong ox, a big animal that helped him. The ox would pull a special wooden tool called a plow. The plow helped dig up the dirt, making it soft and ready for planting tiny seeds of wheat or barley. Swish, swish went the plow, turning over the brown earth. It was hard work, but it helped his family have food to eat.

The Man Got A Big Surprise!

One sunny day, as the farmer was working in a part of a field, he  heard a sound like clink! His plow hit something hard! He stopped his big ox. "What could that be?" he wondered. He thought it was just a big rock hiding in the dirt.

So, he got his little digging tool and started to dig around the clink sound. Dig, dig, dig! And guess what he found? Not a rock! He found an old, old pot  tucked deep down in the ground!

Now, long, long ago, my little ones, people didn't have banks like we do today to keep their money safe. Sometimes, when they had to leave their homes quickly because of big storms or because bad people were coming, they would hide their valuable and precious possessions in the ground. They would put them in places they hoped to remember [Parklinscomb, 2023; Copper Scroll, n.d.]. But sometimes, they couldn't come back, and the precious  things would stay hidden, sleeping in the earth for a very, very long time.

This farmer carefully opened the old pot. And oh my, what he saw made his eyes grow big and his heart sing with joy! It was full of shiny, golden coins and sparkling, colorful jewels! This was  real treasure, more treasure than he had ever seen in his whole life! Can you imagine finding something so valuable and wonderful?

To understand the treasure, do you remember the treasures  that the wise men brought to Jesus? Well this is the same word used in Matthew 13: 44. The wise men brought very expensive treasures of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus!

A Joyful Choice

Did he shout? Did he tell everyone right away? No! He was so, so happy, but he was also very smart. He quickly closed the pot and carefully covered it back up with dirt. Shhh! It was his secret! For now.

He knew something important. The field didn't belong to him, so he couldn't take the treasure. That would be stealing and he didn't want to make God angry. So, he thought and thought about how he could claim the treasure without doing a wrong!

Then, with a huge smile that reached his ears, he made a very important decision. He went and sold everything he had! Think of it, children: he sold his big, strong ox that helped him plow. He sold his simple house, his warm blankets, even his old shoes! He sold everything that was special to him. Why do you think he did that?

He did it because the treasure he found was even more special than his earthly possessions! It was worth more than his house, more than his ox, more than everything he owned!

So, with all the money he got from selling everything, he bought the whole field where the treasure was hidden. Now, the field was his, and so the treasure was truly his too! He was now very happy!

Meaning Of The Treasure Hidden In A Field

Now Jesus told these parables of stories to help us to understand secrets of God. Here are clues to the secrets:

Treasure: Jesus was not speaking about treasures like gold and silver. He really meant that treasures are Heavenly knowledge, wisdom, understanding and secrets.

Do you know that one time He told His disciples to lay up treasures in Heaven and not on the earth?

Yes! That is found in Matthew 6: 19 & 20:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,

but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal."

Treasures on earth and treasures in Heaven

So you see, children, there are treasures on earth and treasures in heaven. The most important treasures are those in Heaven.  The treasures on earth will decay and rot, but the treasures in Heaven will last forever.

Anyone who seeks the treasures of Heaven will have an amazing possession that will last forever.

Why did the man hide the treasure and sell all that he had to buy the field?

The man hid the treasure and sold all that he possessed in order to buy it. The man showed by his actions that the things of the Kingdom of Heaven were extremely important to him. He desperately valued the things of God that would last forever and did all he could to own them.

In fact, Jesus said it clearly in these words:

for where your treasure is, there your heart [your wishes, your desires; that on which your life centers] will be also - Matthew 6: 21.

If you value the things of the Kingdom of Heaven, you will give your full attention, time and effort to getting them into your life, so that you can live forever. That means that you will take time to read and study the Word of God and to listen to it. In this way, God will reveal the truths that are hidden in the pages of the bible.

Why Was The Treasure Hidden in a Field?

So now that we know that the man found the treasures of the Kingdom of Heaven, why do you think God hid His treasures?  God hid His treasure because  He wants people who are seeking to find it. He will not reveal His Heavenly secrets and truths to people who do not love Him and who do not care.

Since the man found the treasure in the field, it seems that He was looking for treasure there. Only people who seek the things of God will uncover the hidden mysteries that He stores up for the righteous.

What is the Field?

The field is the world, where people live. We know this because Jesus told other stories or parables about the field. He even explained the meaning clearly when He said:

The field G68 is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one- Matthew 13: 38.

Everyone in the world is not looking for God's treasure. Only those who love Him will seek and find the things that are eternal.

Little Questions for Little Minds (FAQ)

Q1: Why did the man hide the treasure again after he found it? A1: He hid it again because the field didn't belong to him yet. He wanted to keep it a secret until he could buy the whole field, so the treasure would be truly his! It was like finding the best toy ever and wanting to make sure it was really yours!

Q2: Why did he sell everything he had? That sounds like a lot!

A2: Yes, it was a lot! But he sold everything because the Heavenly treasure was even more valuable and made him even happier than anything else he owned. It was worth giving up his old things for something so, so much better! Like giving up a small piece of candy for the biggest, most delicious cake!

Q3: What is the special "treasure" in this story? A3: The special "treasure" refer to Heavenly truths and secrets that God hides in His Word.  The Word of God is best thing you can ever have. Its treasures are more precious than gold or jewels, because it brings true joy and happiness to your heart.

The Best Gift Ever! (Conclusion)

So, my little friends, remember the farmer and secret treasure that he found hidden in a field. That is the Heavenly treasure found in the Word of God. If you want to live forever and live in the earth by God's secrets, you will do all that you can to get this treasure and never give it up.

What Makes Your Heart Happy? (Call to Action)

Think about what makes your heart really, really happy. What do you cherish more than anything else in the whole wide world. Do you love playing with toys and friends, watching cartoons, and having fun more than you love reading the Word of God and praying?

Think about it! If you want God's eternal treasures, you will give time and attention to the things that will never rust or pass away. So take time today to read God's Word, to pray and to do the things that please Him.
